Art
All students participate in art, studying form and format of various
artists as well as enjoying, creating and displaying their own works of
art. The students' work is displayed in our classrooms for all to enjoy.
Dance
Our Year 2 and 3 class is regularly invited to participate in an annual Christchurch primary schools dance festival. The children perform a dance choreographed by their teacher around a given festival theme. This is a fabulous experience where the children perform at both daytime and evening performances attended by family and the wider Christchurch community.
Drama
The junior school put on a production every year at the end of Term 4.
We invite older students and families to come and enjoy our
performance.
Middle/senior school performing arts
During Term 3 each year all middle and senior class students are involved in this programme which often involves:
visual art, dance, drama, script writing, all aspects of theatre, music and
technology. Children are encouraged to participate in as many of these learning areas as possible with guidance from the teachers. This culminates in several performances in the library which is transformed into a theatre.
Each year a different focus ensures that new challenges are presented and productions show continual development.
Music
We
have an active music programme at our school with the recorder and
ukulele being taught during class time. The younger students also
participate in making and playing their own musical instruments. The
students enjoy performing to the school community during assemblies. The
school choir is drawn from students in the middle and senior school.
Visiting music teachers
We are fortunate to have visiting teachers who come to the school once a
week and give our students the opportunity to learn violin and/or guitar.
These lessons need to be paid for separately by parents and it is
expected that the students will make a commitment to practising their
chosen instrument. Violin
teacher Ian Bolton teaches at school on a Wednesday morning. Ian was born in Australia and is a graduate of the Canberra School of Music. His professional experience includes eight years with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Sydney, as well as freelancing and further study in Sydney and Cologne, Germany. Since 2000 he has lived in Christchurch where he plays with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and teaches extensively.
Hanafi Machirus offers guitar lessons on a Thursday morning. Hanafi has a diploma
in jazz studies (1994) and a diploma of teaching (1995). He has been a professional guitar
tutor since 1996 and a member of the Hagley Community College Itinerant Unit of music
teachers since 1997.
